We are delighted to announce that Jill Timms (one of our newest FIE faculty members, who taught on the Spring 2013 Open Enrolment Ethical Dilemmas: Business & the World course), recently achieved her Ph.D at London School of Economics and Political Science!
The study was entitled ‘Where responsibility lies: Corporate social responsibility and campaigns for the rights of workers’ in a global economy’. For this Jill investigated the development of corporate social responsibility (CSR) discourse and practice as it relates to the treatment of workers, particularly those involved in transnational supply chains. Three case studies were done of labour rights campaigns, to illustrate how competing agendas play out when the responsibilities a company has to workers are in dispute. It was shown that activist framing of the employment relationship in terms of CSR is being mobilised to achieve improved conditions of work and to influence debate of where responsibility lies.
Congratulations Jill!
